Daniel Schrubb joined the U.S. Army 1984 and served 4 years as a rifleman, with deployments to Sinai, Egypt and the DMZ area of South Korea. After his contract was complete, he transferred to the Army Reserve for another 4 years, working as a construction engineer near Dallas.
He subsequently joined the Marine Corps where his job was a combat photographer, specializing in motion media, or videographer. His duty stations include Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro, CA; MCAS Miramar, then to Syracuse, New York where he was accepted into the Military Motion Media Studies Program at the Newhouse School, Syracuse University. Next, he deployed to Iraq, in early 2003, with the 1st Marine Division under the command of Gen. James Mattis and Gen. John Kelly.
Upon returning, he was ordered to recruiting duty at Recruiting Station Albuquerque, Sub-Station Amarillo Texas; then to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and finally, to Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA. In 2012-2013, he deployed to the Helmand Province, Afghanistan to serve as a Force Protection Fielding Officer. He retired in late 2014 with 28 years of dedicated service.
While preparing for retirement, he attended the Transition Assistance Program classes where he heard about Entrepreneur classes that were available. He had a strong desire to pursue that track which led him to qualify for the Boots to Business online course through the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, and the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Boots to Business introduced him to the fundamentals of business ownership and allowed him to take a look at the necessary steps involved in planning for opening a business. It helped him pivot from pursuing a business in another industry that would not have been profitable, or good for his family.
He and his wife knew they wanted to live in the Texas Hill Country and settled north of San Antonio. MSgt Daniel “Top Pop” Schrubb, USMC, served his last day on active duty on December 31, 2014. They opened their first Popcorn Friday location in February 2015 and in the summer 2017, they opened an online store -www.PopcornFriday.com. They look back on their time in the Marine Corps with fondness and pride, and look forward to the future with hope and determination.
